Who are the Austin Angelfish?

The Austin Angelfish team, is a competitive synchronized swimming team that includes girls ages 6-18 who work to master challenging underwater acrobatics while staying in perfect synchronization with their team mates. The team was formed in the late 1980s by Ruth Pignotti and Julie Woodring.  Ruth left the team in 1995 and Cheryl Cook took over as head coach.  Ellen Jekot, Cheryl Chance, Kara Myers, Kaitlyn Meyers and former Angelfish Rose Nussbaum,, Kira Stzrepa, Annie Nordhauser and Ginny Whisenhunt make up the rest of our wonderful coaching staff.

This coming Spring, the Angelfish will be competing at Association, Regional and Zone level Championships in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio and in March we will travel to the Senior Zone Championship in Washington, D.C.  In addition, we will be traveling to Oxford, Ohio in June, for the National Age Group Championships.   Competing at Nationals is the culmination of ten months of practice, hard work and dedication from our athletes, parents and coaching staff!

What is Synchronized Swimming? While many people think of the movie star of the 40's, Esther Williams, when they hear about synchronized swimming, we've come a long way!  Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport that incorporates:

  • Grace of dance.
  • Endurance of speed swimming.
  • Body control of martial arts.
  • Flexibility and strength of gymnastics.
  • More aerobic conditioning than running.

In addition, all of the movements are choreographed to music and performed in perfect synchronization.
